Why
do ducks need a backhoe?

We get
asked this all the time. The answer is simple. We have
limited funds to direct to feed, hay, electricity, vet
care and basic supplies. After covering these
expenditures, we have a remaining nest egg to use
towards building new pens to expand our sanctuary, which
is one of our main objectives. The more pens we have,
the more animals we can help. It's as simple as that.
Renting an
excavator for a single two-day weekend costs us
between $700 and $1000. Spending so much
money annually on equipment rentals seriously impacts
our available funds for the rest of the build project.
Keep in
mind it costs us approximately $5000 to build a 25' x
25' safe, predator proof waterfowl enclosure. This
includes: excavation, cement, lumber, hardware, fencing,
piping, electricity, pond liner and aviary net. We are
tossing a minimum of $700 of the project into a hole--literally.
Renting an
excavator also limits the amount of time we can spend on
our new pen's foundation, which impacts how large our
pens can be as well as their shape and functionality.
Imagine
how much more we could do with an excavator at our
disposal. We could build larger pens more frequently,
with less expense, while also incorporating better pen
design and greater functionality.
All of
this equates to us being able to help more animals while
still ensuring their top-notch care.

"Come on, it's not like you're
using it for anything!"
