Majestic Diary

November 23, 2013

Today was a rough day...

This morning we received a phone call about a wild Mallard who had been shot and was in a retired Norwich police officer's yard. We aren't certified to handle wild ducks, but a friend called in a favor, so I rushed out to get him and bring him to our vet.

Two of the pellets in him didn't hit anything vital, but one was just outside of his heart. He stayed with the vet for a few hours under observation (and sedated) and then I went to pick him up and bring him home. I set him up in a pet carrier in our sun room where it was nice and quiet.

I talked with a couple of certified wildlife rehabbers who were willing to take him, but they agreed with me that I should hold him for a day or two because the stress of moving him again might do him more harm than good.

Sadly... Little Warren passed away around 7 p.m. I'm glad that he was safe and sedated and not in pain, but broken hearted to have lost him after so much effort.

And do you know... when I asked the police officer if he'd like to make a donation to help with Warren's $250 vet bill... not a penny...
