Mushrooms & Toadstools
August humidity is the ideal time for mushrooms and toadstools to pop up around your yard--and inside your duck pen. The worst part is, they grow very fast and some practically appear overnight--where did THAT come from?!
Are they edible or are they toxic? A common question, but unless you yourself are a seasoned and trained in the field mushroom expert (and even they make mistakes), we highly recommend you ignore your pocket mushroom guidebook and simply assume what you're seeing is poisonous. One little mistake can be fatal for your ducks or geese, so why risk it?
Mushrooms in or around your duck pen or yard should be pulled out of the ground and discarded immediately. We always recommend discarding them far from grounds where ducks and geese forage, preferably throwing them into the trash to help prevent the spreading of their spores (which can cause future growth).
Many varieties of edible mushrooms have dangerous toxic look-alikes that can easily fool a Momma or Poppa duck, so... When in doubt, pluck them up and throw them out!
As one example, here are two common look-alike trixters, the safe shaggy parasol and its poisonous cousin the false parasol:
