Majestic Residents

While we rescued and placed 29 abandoned ducks last year, our current residents amount to seven. Why? First, we are attending to a few serious family medical issues at home. Second, we are gearing down toward retirement over the next 8 years, which means coordinating local rescues and direct-placing as many ducks and geese as we can to ensure when we do retire, everyone has a home. And finally, we have our hands pretty full here attending to the special needs of our resident rescues, especially as they continue to get up there in years. Airline Ellie will be heading to her new home with Eeben this spring (possibly in April!) all others are retired and will be spending the rest of their lives here except maybe Miracle (but those plans are undecided and entirely top secret!).

This year Asaru turns 15 years old, Deja vu turns 8, Miracle 6, Airline Ellie 5, Evie 10 and Peter & Peabody both turn 20!

Evie struggles with recurring eye infections, which always start on holidays when we can't get her to a vet for a swab culture (we think she knows this...). This means we have to resort to just starting her on antibiotics without figuring out the exact culprit. She is currently on both oral and topical antibiotics.

Airline Ellie thought it fun to start molting in December and this off-season hobby of hers has resulted in slower than normal regrowth, so we are watching her very carefully to ensure she is warm enough (fortunately her chubbiness works in her favor!). She and Miracle have their own side of the barn for now to ensure Asaru doesn’t try any hanky panky that might damage any new feather growth.

Both Miracle and Asaru are blind (Miracle was abandoned that way, Asaru has cataracts). We keep everything the same so they can find things with ease. They’re masters at finding their way!

Deja Vu is doing quite well, but since she’s overcome two bouts of aspergillosis over the years (the joy of living in the midst of massive corn fields), she’s more highly susceptible, so we always have a careful eye on her, so we can spot early symptoms (which for her, manifest in dizziness) should they arise again.

Peabody has advanced arthritis, so we have her on joint meds. And Peter? Well he's practically a spring chicken with bounce in every step! Both are residing in TinTin’s Tubhouse for the winter, which is heated to help them stay nice and cozy warm.

Occasionally, we have breaks in this freezing cold Connecticut weather where the ice melts enough so that the ducks can go out for a swim. Otherwise, they remain in their hay-stuffed barn!
